Amy Hawker, Podiatrist in Ocean Grove Talks…. Winter Foot Care: 7 Essential Tips to Keep Your Feet Happy and Healthy

As the colder months set in, many of us start to notice new foot problems. Even here in Geelong, Torquay and Ocean Grove , where the winters may be mild, we still experience enough chill to affect our feet. As a podiatrist, I see an increase in common foot complaints during winter, including corns, ingrown toenails, dry or cracked skin, and general lower limb pain. To keep your feet in top shape this season, follow our top 7 winter foot care tips.

1. Moisturise, Moisturise, Moisturise

Cold air and indoor heating can really dry out your skin. To prevent dry, flaky skin or painful cracks, apply a good quality moisturiser daily. If you find this isn’t enough, switch to a urea-based heel balm. Look for products with a 25% urea concentration for the best results, but higher percentages are even more effective. If you still struggle with hard skin or calluses, it might be time to visit a podiatrist for professional debridement.

2. Prevent Chilblains

Wondering what chilblains are? They’re red, itchy, swollen patches that appear on the skin, usually on the extremities, due to sudden changes in temperature. To prevent chilblains, keep your feet and hands warm by avoiding extreme temperature changes, such as hot showers to warm up or walking barefoot on cold surfaces. Those with diabetes, heart conditions, or vascular issues should be particularly cautious and may need to seek professional advice.

3. Maintain Nail Care

Just because your toes are hidden in winter boots doesn’t mean they can be ignored. Regular nail care is crucial during winter months. Keep your toenails trimmed to avoid trauma and painful ingrown toenails, and consider taking a break from nail polish to let your nails breathe and check for any fungal infections.

4. Keep Your Feet Dry

Wet weather can be hard on your feet. Make sure to dry your shoes thoroughly before wearing them again and avoid staying in wet socks and shoes for long periods. Prolonged moisture exposure can lead to skin issues like fungal infections. Opt for moisture-wicking socks and water-resistant shoes to keep your feet dry and comfortable.

5. Stay Active

Don’t let the winter chill keep you from exercising. Regular physical activity helps reduce leg swelling, prevent joint stiffness, and boost circulation. Aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise a day to stay warm, keep off those extra winter kilos, and support your foot health.

6. Be Careful with Heat Sources

If you have conditions that affect skin integrity, circulation, or sensation, such as diabetes, be cautious around heat sources. Sitting too close to heaters or using heating pads can cause burns, which could lead to ulcers and infections if not treated properly. Check your feet regularly to ensure they’re safe and healthy.

7. Ensure a Proper Fit

Many winter shoes are too narrow or shallow, which can cause corns and foot pain from prolonged wear. It’s essential to have properly fitted shoes, especially in the colder months when we spend more time in enclosed footwear. If you’re experiencing pain or discomfort, a visit to a podiatrist can help diagnose the problem and find the right solutions for you.
