What are the best shoes for nurses and midwives? Geelong Podiatrist, Amy Hawker Explains…

Here at Stance Podiatry we understand that foot problems can affect your overall well-being so good foot care is an important part of your health. Professions such as nursing are demanding on the feet and aching, flat or tired feet are common. Standing for hours, day after day, not only tires the feet and legs but can cause knee, hip and back pain. Here are Stance Podiatry within our clinic located in Geelong, Torquay and Ocean Grove…we are here to help!

The type of shoe you wear depends on the type of activity it will be worn for, the type of foot you have, your age, and any medical conditions or foot problems that you have. But there are some simple tips for footwear fitting:

  • Get your feet measured periodically

  • When choosing new shoes, always try on both shoes and take time to test them out

  • Shoes should be long enough and deep enough to avoid pressure on the tips or tops of the toes

  • Shoes should be the width of your thumb longer than your longest toe

  • Shoes should have a firm fastening device around the instep to hold the foot back against the heel, to prevent the foot sliding forwards and the heel slipping out of the shoe

  • A low, broad heel will reduce the pressure on the front of the foot and increase stability (a raised heel will distribute your weight to the front of your foot instead).

  • The sole of the shoes should be non-slip

  • Shoes should have the right cushioning and support for your particular feet

If you think you’ve got the correct shoes but you’re still struggling with pain, speak to one of our podiatrists here as Stance Podiatry as an orthotic may help to restore your foot function.
